CANCER CENTERANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITYNew Screening for Women with Dense Breasts, now available in La CrosseThe statistics are alarming. Women with dense breast tissue are more likely to develop breast cancerthan other women, and are less ikely to have it detected with a mammogram. In fact, some studiesestimate that mammography detects fewer than half the cancers in dense breasts. Up to half ofwomen 40 and older have dense breast tissue, so that puts a large number of women at risk. There is great news -A screening tool recently developed by Mayo Clinic physicians calledMolecular Breast Imaging (MBI) is three times more effective than mammography alone at detectingcancer in dense breast tissue. When cancer is detected early, patients can be treated with lessinvasive measures and recover faster. In a clinical study of 940 women with dense breasts, MBIl plusmammography accurately detected cancer 91 percent of the time.MBI is now available at the Center for Breast Care in La Crosse MBl is a new technologyfor screening women with dense breasts.
